We are often asked about high protein, low carbohydrate diets. One of the most famous is the Atkins diet and we tend to discourage it. The Atkins diet is very non-physiological and has some rather strange effects on human metabolism. The Atkins diet is considered a diet of last resort after all else is failed and should be discussed closely with your physician before considering it. We vastly prefer the Sugar Busters diet as a high protein, low carb choice. The Sugar Busters diet is a 1,400 calorie diet. What makes this diet work is that it asks you to avoid all simple carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates tend to raise our cholesterol levels, our insulin levels, our blood sugar levels, our triglycerides (fat) in the blood levels, and our blood pressures. They go straight to our waists and they increase the appetite. Simple carbohydrates are, for example, white flour, products made from white flour such as. cakes, white breads, pasta. Other simple carbohydrates include potatoes, corn products, cooked carrots, white rice and sugar. This list is only partial and we are asking you to go get yourself a copy of the Sugar Busters diet from a bookstore and read it. Go first to the section of the book where there is a list of simple carbohydrates to avoid and start avoiding those right away. Then work on your quantities and read the rest of the book to understand how this all works. We have had more success with weight loss with this diet in the past two or three years than we have seen -in- the past two decades with all the other efforts and diets that we have made. People who have never lost, weight before have lost significant amounts of weight on this diet. Some of them as much as 60 to 100 pounds and more. The Sugar Busters, diet is not a low cholesterol and low fat diet, but as you read it you will understand why it can reduce cholesterol and fat levels in the blood. Once you are1 down to' target weight, you should have your cholesterol checked. If you have a cholesterol or heart problem,, we would ask you to pare back the amount of cholesterol and fat you consume. The Sugar Busters .Diet is great for weight loss but it is not a low cholesterol low fat diet. -Once your desired weight is achieved on this diet, reducing cholesterol and fat becomes your goal. The best' diet of all for heart tTealth is Dr. Dean Ornish' s diet (found at bookstores) . But .it can be hard to follow. The Mediterranean diet is heart healthy but not .that' useful for weight loss. You should also look at our "Killer Fats and Oils" handout to make sure that you keep the partially hydrogenated and hydrogenated oils out of your diet at all times. Here are some simple initial substitutions you start .with: use whole grain bread instead of white bread, use whole grain flours instead of white or unbleached flour, use brown rice instead of white rice, eat sweet potato instead of regular potato. Lose your sweet tooth or use artifical sweeteners. Recent studies have shown that losing 30 pounds delivers tremendous health benefits for people, who are overweight. These recent studies have also shown that including whole grains in the diet instead of refined white flour is worth a 30%. to -40% drop in heart attack rate and stroke rate and is associated with lower rates of cancer as well.
